Jan. 30 marks the 62nd anniversary of his assassination. After his death in 1948, Gandhi's ashes were divided and sent in urns across the globe, a portion ending here in South Africa. The ashes were turned over to Ela Gandhi by a family friend. Mahatma Gandhi was born, Oct. 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India. While originally traveling to South Africa for legal work, he ended up staying for 21 years, working to secure rights for the Indian people. He is best known for developing a method of action based upon the principles of nonviolence called Satyagraha. After returning to India, Mahatma Gandhi became the leader of the Indian nationalist movement and was instrumental in the campaign for Indian independence from Britain. Ela Gandhi asked the South African Navy to assist in this process and invited the U.S. Navy to observe.
