New Mexico Army National Guard Pvt. Caleb Moreno of Lovington, N.M., is the first to earn an appointment into the United States Military Academy Preparatory School (USMA) and the subsequent four-year Academy through a program with the National Guard. Moreno’s academic performance, leadership skills, extracurricular activities, community involvement and recommendations from his teachers and community leaders helped to secure him a coveted seat at the Academy. Moreno will attend West Point for a total of five years and graduate with a Bachelor of Science as well as a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army. The total cost of the fully funded education includes tuition, scholarships, housing and cadet pay amounting to an estimated $450,000.
