Fueling the Fight: Airmen Making a Difference One Gallon at a Time in Southwest Asia

Staff Sgt. Garret Nichols, a fuels distribution craftsman with the 380th Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels management flight, checks a fuel pipeline connection during operations at the fuel bladder storage facility at a non-disclosed base in Southwest Asia, Jan. 6. On any given day, Nichols and other fuels Airmen in his flight can off-load up to 600,000 gallons of fuel from host nation supplier fuel trucks. In 2009, the 380th ELRS fuels management flight pumped more than 188 million gallons of fuel in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa. Nichols is deployed from the 78th Logistics Readiness Squadron at Robins Air Force Base, Ga., and his hometown is Boston, Mass.
