Rear Adm. Kenneth Iverson, commander of Navy Medicine East, speaks with Lt. Sarah Pierce, division officer for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, during a tour of Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, June 15. This last month alone there have been 246 neonatal patients 32 weeks and older that were cared for at NHCL, and babies as small as 579 grams have been stabilized. These beds utilize a cascade control algorithm to minimize temperature swings along with multiple features intended to reduce stressful handling, protecting premature babies until they are ready for the outside world.
