Retired German navy Capt. Werner Rahn (left-center) is presented the Hattendorf Prize for distinguished original research in maritime history from Adm. John M. Richardson, chief of naval operations, at U.S. Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, Rhode Island. Established in 2011, the Hattendorf Prize, named for John Hattendorf, the Ernest J. King professor of maritime history at NWC, is an international award given to recognize original research contributions in the field of maritime history.
