POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA, Hawaii – Marines with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 3’s “Phantoms,” prepare to launch an RQ-7B Shadow unmanned aerial system in order to provide aerial reconnaissance for ground assets during a direct fire training exercise as part of Lava Viper, a staple in the battalion’s pre-deployment training, on Oct. 16, 2016, at Cooper Airstrip aboard Pohakuloa Training Area, Hawaii. Lava Viper provides the Hawaii-based Marines with an opportunity to conduct various movements, live-fire and tactical training, integrating combined arms exercises, before departing for Integrated Training Exercise aboard Marine Air-Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California, where the battalion will train and be evaluated as a whole.
