U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (Jan. 16, 2017) The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67) flies the National Ensign and the 4th Marine Division (MARDIV) flag during the Cole Memorial wreath-laying ceremony that honored the 17 Sailors who lost their lives on October 12, 2000. The 4th MARDIV flag is flown in honor of the ships namesake, Marine Sergeant Darrell S. Cole, a machine-gunner killed in action on Iwo Jima on 19 February 1945. Cole is deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts.
