Jim Lanham, sergeant major of the 31st MEU, test protective gear aboard amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) in preparation for a helo cast exercise with the Maritime Raid Force (MRF). A helo cast is a method used to insert reconnaissance and surveillance teams for amphibious reconnaissance missions requiring small boat operations. Bonhomme Richard, flagship of the Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group, with embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, is on a routine patrol, operating in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region to enhance warfighting readiness and posture forward as a ready-response force for any type of contingency.
