Iowa Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Carmen Z. Davis, of Ankeny, Iowa, Service Support Noncommissioned Officer and Yellow Ribbon coordinator at Joint Forces Headquarters, in Johnston, Iowa, looks through old photographs from basic training in the late 1970s. Davis is one of just three remaining Soldiers in the Iowa National Guard who originally joined the Women’s Army Corps, a separate branch of service for females created during World War II and disbanded in 1978. She joined the WAC as a field wireman, tasked with running wires for radio communications, but was soon transferred to a position in human resources when an officer heard her rapidly typing a letter home.
