INDIAN OCEAN (March 30, 2017) Quartermaster 3rd Class Robert Ahrns, right, from Clare, Mich., and Quartermaster 2nd Class Brandon Mingo, from Darlington, S.C., draw the outline for a white Battle "E" on the side of the island superstructure of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). The Battle “E” is awarded annually throughout the Navy to ships whose crews consistently exhibit excellence in wartime capabilities and optimal mission readiness within their platform and region. Makin Island, the flagship for the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, with the embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is operating in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region to enhance amphibious capability with regional partners and to serve as a ready-response force for any type of contingency.
