BREMERTON, Washington (March 31, 2017) Master Chief Hull Maintenance Technician Carl Hall from Hot Springs, South Dakota (oldest chief), Chief Master-at-Arms Eldris Vazquezflores from Humacao, Puerto Rico (newest chief), and Command Master Chief Benjamin Rushing cut a cake during a celebration of the 124th birthday of the chief petty officer rank aboard John C. Stennis’ (CVN 74) berthing barge used to provide living and workspace as well as basic services during the ongoing maintenance period. During the celebration, several members of John C. Stennis' chief's mess spoke to the crew about the importance of being a chief and what leadership means to them. Navy General Order 409 created the rank of chief petty officer on April 1, 1893. John C. Stennis is conducting a planned incremental availability (PIA) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, during which the ship is undergoing scheduled maintenance and upgrades.
