U.S. Army Col. (Ret) Ben Skardon, 99, WWII hero and Bataan Death March survivor, salutes Henry Leitner’s stone in Clemson University’s Scroll of Honor after placing an American flag on it during a flag placing ceremony in preparation for Memorial Day observances, May 25, 2017. Leitner and Skardon, both Clemson alums, survived the infamous Bataan Death March and were Prisoners of War together. Skardon credits Leitner and another Clemson alum, Otis Morgan, for saving his life while they were all imprisoned in Japanese POW camps. Leitner and Morgan did not survive the war.
