SAN DIEGO, (June 8, 2017) – Chief Machinist’s Mate Auxiliary Joel Towry goes over a Ship Control Team Trainer with Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) midshipmen at the Submarine Learning Center (SLC) on Navy Base Pt. Loma, California, June 8. The midshipmen were taking part in Submarine Officer Week as part of their Career Orientation and Training for Midshipmen (CORTRAMID) program along with more than 500 other midshipmen. CORTRAMID is a four-week summer event for midshipmen entering their second or third year of college as part of their school’s NROTC unit to visit different Naval and Marine Corps officer communities and observe training. While at SLC the midshipmen operated the Ship Control Team Trainer and attempted to stop flooding in the Ship Wet Trainer. According to the SLC website, the Emergency Ship Control Team Trainer (https://www.netc.navy.mil/centers/slc/stfsnd/Training.htm#tab2) is configured as a nuclear submarine ship control room area mounted on a hydraulically powered motion system. Computer generated surface effects, near surface effects, wave action, and bathythermal effects simulate at sea ship operations. The wet trainer gave the midshipmen an opportunity to patch pipes and prevent flooding in a compartment. (U.S. Navy photo by Scott A. Thornbloom/Released)
