U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry views a proof-of-concept hull for the Optionally Manned Technology Demonstrator (OMTD) while visiting the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., May 22. The 30-foot-long OMTD hull, which is modeled after today's conventionally manufactured Mark 8 Mod 1 SEAL delivery vehicle, was produced by a multi-agency coalition assembled by Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division's Disruptive Technology Laboratory, and won the OMTD team a 2017 Naval Sea Systems Command Commander's Award during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., July 19. The expertise and facilities at the MDF were critical in producing this hull, which is the largest 3-D printed naval asset ever.
