U.S. Army Reserve Spc. Cody J. Boelkens, a horizontal construction engineer assigned to the 317th Engineer Construction Company, 863rd Engineer Battalion, 416th Theater Engineer Command, from Homewood, Ill., creates a ditch using a road grader to prevent the buildup of excess water on the road July 30, 2017, on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation near Browning, Mont. Boelkens recently transferred from the Active Army to the Army Reserve after serving three years as an infantryman. The 317th ECC is conducting their annual training at the Blackfeet Reservation to construct roads for the local population as part of the Innovative Readiness Training program, which bridges the gap between essential military training and the needs of civil society.
