U.S. Marine Corps Pvt. Marqueis D. Johnson, a 19-year-old native of Woodbridge, Va., crawls through the mud during the Crucible on Parris Island, S.C. Johnson is with Platoon 2053, Hotel Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate July 14, 2017. “I wanted to make a difference and be a part of something bigger than myself. My cousin, Nathan, who is also a Marine, inspired me to make this choice,” said Johnson. “I look forward to the sense of belonging and the discipline that is offered by the Marine Corps.” Approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 12 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
