A recruit raises his gas mask to be inspected by an instructor July 25, 2017, on Parris Island, S.C. Before entering the gas chamber, recruits learn the proper applications of the gas mask, as well as how to spot any potential problems with the mask. Kilo Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 15, 2017. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
