On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft and performed coordinated attacks against the United States. Nearly 3,000 individuals were killed when two of the aircraft struck the World Trade Center, one struck the Pentagon and the last crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. On the anniversary of these events, Americans across the country honor the first responders and victims of 9/11. (U.S. Air Force graphic by Airman 1st Class Kathryn R.C. Reaves)
