GARMSIR DISTRICT, Helmand Province, Afghanistan — Lance Cpl. Michael Whitson, native of Boston, patrols an alleyway in Garmsir District, April 26. The patrol was a joint operation with Marines from 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment and 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment. Whitson, an assistant patrol leader with the Guard Force Platoon, Hotel Company, 1/3, is among the 1/3 Marines assuming security responsibilities in the Garmsir District from. The 2/1 Marines are returning to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., after a seven-month deployment.
