Marines, sailors and civilian members of Marine Transport Squadron 1 gather for a unit photo before VMR-1 turns its HH-46 helicopters over to the Navy in September 2015. For decades, VMR-1 operated C-9B Skytrains and the smaller UC-35D Cessna Encores for worldwide transport missions, while providing search and rescue support to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing with HH-46D Seaknight helicopters, known locally as Pedro. The helicopters, the last H-46 helicopters to fly for the Department of Defense, were transferred when the Marine Corps' search and rescue mission was discontinued. The end of another era will be marked in late December 2017 when VMR-1 transfers from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., to its new base of operations in Fort Worth, Texas, under the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron turned its UC-35 transport mission over to Cherry Point's Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron in November 2017, leaving only the C-9B in its fleet until the Marine Corps later upgrades to the C-40A for that mission.
