Michel Sauret is among the most published photojournalists in the U.S. Army Reserve, currently a master sergeant serving as a public affairs professional for the 200th Military Police Command, responsible for covering the training, deployment and missions of approximately 14,000 Military Police Soldiers across 36 states and deployed abroad.
Sauret is a 2016 “graduate” of the Eddie Adams Workshop, and an independent photography business owner of One Way Street Production since 2010. In 2009 he received the Army Journalist of the Year Award for his stories and coverage while deployed to Iraq (2008-2009). His stories and photography have won several Brumfield, Keith L. Ware, Thomas Jefferson and MILPHOG Awards, serving to promote the military and the Army life to nationwide and international audiences. His military work has been published both in print and online by the National Geographic, USA Today, Military Times, Army Times, Stars and Stripes, View Find, Mother Jones, GX Magazine, Task & Purpose, along with multiple independent military websites, civilian newspapers and dozens of DoD publications.
Sauret was born in Rome, Italy, and originally moved to Pittsburgh with his parents and siblings at the age of 10, knowing only a handful of words in English. He has published three books of fiction, to include “Amidst Traffic” which won the International Book Awards and the Indie Excellence Book Awards for Short Stories in 2013. His latest novel, “Jump” was released in May 2016.
He reached the grade of E-8 in less than 13 years of service, starting basic combat training as a PV2. He joined the U.S. Army Reserve in September 2002 as a track vehicle mechanic (63Y), but transferred into the public affairs field in 2005, and officially graduated from the Defense Information School as a 46Q in March, 2006. Since that time, Sauret has worked as a public affairs journalist, photographer, training and operations NCO at the 354th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, as an acting command sergeant major for the 361st Press Camp Headquarters and as a communication strategist at two division-level headquarters, including the 416th Theater Engineer Command and his current assignment.
Sauret’s research work, information gathering and photography were used extensively in every edition of “Army Reserve at a Glance” (2014-2017), a communication outreach tool produced by the Army Reserve Communications office to convey the significance and value of the U.S. Army Reserve to the U.S. Congress, State leaders, Army Reserve Ambassadors and Army officials at the three-star level and above.
Sauret was the Distinguished Honor Graduate for both his Advanced Leadership (July 2011) and Senior Leadership Courses (August 2012) at the Signal Corps Regimental Noncommissioned Officer Academy for Public Affairs at Fort Meade, Maryland. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English Writing from the University of Pittsburgh.
Sauret has received two Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals and four Army Achievement Medals, among other certificates and award ribbons for his duty and commitment to the U.S. Army.
Sauret is married to his wife, Heather, of 10 years. Together they have three children: Phoenix, 6; Asher, 3; and Anakai, 10 months.
