Sgt. Joyce Kilmer, a New York City magazine editor and poet in civilian life, most famous as the author of the poem "Trees" served as sergeant in the intelligence section of the Rainbow Division's 165th Regiment during World War I. Kilmer turned down the chance to become an officer because he liked serving as a non-commissioned officer in the section. He was later killed in action. ( 69th Infantry)
