Alaska Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Heath Chesnut, an infantryman with 1st Battalion, 297th Infantry Regiment, suits up before taking a commercial plane March 6, 2018, at Deadhorse, Alaska, to Ice Camp Skate at the North Pole. Chesnut is a pathfinder who was responsible for rigging a sling load evacuating Arctic Sustainment Package dunnage by way of an Alaska Air National Guard HH-60 Pave Hawk. ICEX is a five-week exercise that allows the U.S. Navy to assess its operational readiness in the Arctic, increase experience in the region, advance understanding of the Arctic environment, and continue to develop relationships with other services, allies and partner organizations.
