Sgt. Mahad Ahmed, a 36th Infantry Division translator working as a mayor’s cell non-commissioned officer, Headquarters and Support Company, 36th Division Special Troops Battalion, oversees Iraqi crews clearing out a section of Contingency Operating Base Basra as part of the transition of U.S. forces out of Iraq. The Baghdad, Iraq, native originally served in Saddam Hussein’s army during the initial U.S. involvement in Iraq, but his hatred of the brutal regime caused him leave. He was offered a job translating for the U.S. Army, and eventually received a visa to move to the U.S., where he joined the Texas Army National Guard in order to continue helping out the people of Iraq. He is on his second tour of duty in his native land.
