Peterson, a native of Sabetha, Kan., is an assistant patrol leader with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. The shrine area is more than 600 years old and is revered by the local people. The Afghan government and coalition forces are planning refurbishments.
