Pāhoa, Hawaii, May 20, 2018 – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) On-Scene Coordinator Jason Musante tests the amount of sulfur dioxide in the air during the Kīlauea volcanic eruption. The residential area of Leilani Estates has been evacuated due to lava spill, earthquakes, fire, and high concentrations of sulfur dioxide. As part of a FEMA mission-assignment, EPA is working with the Hawaii Department of Health to help keep residents safe by installing air monitoring stations, which provide data on sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and particulate levels.
