Retired 1st Sgt. Barnett Person, a Montford Point Marine, tells of the struggles against discrimination that he faced in his early years in the Marine Corps, Aug. 26, 2011. The first African American Marines, called the Montford Point Marines, went to recruit training at a separate location in Montford Point Camp, N.C., from 1942 to 1949. These Marines laid the groundwork for the future integration of the Marine Corps.
