180707-N-LR347-001 SAN DIEGO (July 7, 2018) Royal New Zealand Navy Lt. Cmdr. Ben Martin, center, underwater mine countermeasures commander for Task Group (TG) 177.2, conducts a pre-dive briefing for New Zealand and Japanese clearance divers in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise Southern California (SOCAL) area of operations, July 7. TG 177.2 is a subordinate unit of Commander Task Force (CTF) 177, the RIMPAC Mine Warfare Commander. Twenty-five nations, 46 ships, five submarines, about 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 27 to Aug. 2 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world’s largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security of the world’s oceans.
