Spc. Brian Quinonez of the 224th Sustainment Brigade, Long Beach, Calif., performs sit-ups during an early morning Army Physical Fitness Test at Camp San Luis Obispo, Calif., Sept. 12, 2011. The APFT was the first of many events in the week-long Best Warrior’s Competition. This year’s competition will see even more battle-driven, realistic events than years past and plenty of tough events. “I went to the regimental competition in Hawaii two years ago and I learned quite a bit from there,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Rob Whittle, the command sergeant major of the 223rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute, who developed many of the events. “My goal is always to see what they’re doing, learn, bring it back and make it even more difficult and more challenging, because what I’m trying to do is set these soldiers, the ones that win, up for the regional competition.”
