180720-N-SP229-1090 PACIFIC OCEAN (Jul. 20, 2018) Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force explosive ordinance disposal technicians, Petty Officer 2nd Class Daisuke Kiyooka and Petty Officer 2nd Class Takanori Kimura, deploy a Remus 100 unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) to conduct mine hunting operations in Southern California in support of the mine countermeasures combined task group commander during Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise, July 20. The UUV is equipped with sonar that maps the ocean floor, detecting potential exercise sea mines. Twenty-five nations, 46 ships, five submarines, and more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from Jun 27 - Aug. 2 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security of the world's oceans.
