Members of team Fire Boltz react with cheer after qualifying official Jann Koepke determines their payload of two boiled eggs returned safely to earth with no cracks and their first rocket launch was cleared for submission for the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) competition, March 28, 2018, at Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, California. Fire Boltz recorded the two qualifying launches needed to submit for an invitation to the TARC national competition, but missed making the top 100 team cutoff by two points. Fire Boltz, which consisted of middle school students in the Community Home Education Program administered by the Orange County Department of Education, participated in TARC through the Department of Defense STARBASE 2.0 program at STARBASE Los Alamitos. STARBASE Los Alamitos is one of two Department of Defense STARBASE locations facilitated by the California Military Department.
