Sgt. Frist Class Yvette Edmonds, a religious affairs specialists, recovers from injury sustained from a mortar attack, in a hospital on Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, July 2011. The impact of the blast pulled Edmonds back into the building, landing her head first onto a glass table, shattering the glass. For her actions, Edmonds, now with U.S. Military District of Washington, was awarded the Purple Heart. The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the president to those wounded or killed while serving, on or after April 5, 1917, with the U.S. military.
