ARCTIC OCEAN – U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew Lavallee, 29, of Fairfield, Calif., operates a winch to lower scientific sensors in the Arctic Ocean Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) approximately 300 miles northeast of Barrow, Alaska. Lavallee is a 2007 graduate of Armijo High School in Fairfield and is one of about 100 Coast Guard members aboard the Seattle-based ship conducting Arctic research for the Office of Naval Research. Approximately 30 scientists are aboard the Healy to study stratified ocean dynamics and how environmental factors affect the water below the ice surface. The Healy is one of two ice breakers in U.S. service and is the only military ship dedicated to conducting ice research in the Arctic.
