The crescent moon symbol on the side of an ambulance distinguishes it between other tactical vehicles aboard Forward Operating Base Delaram, Afghanistan, Oct. 23. The symbol is meant to ward off attacks on the vehicle, granting medical personnel and those they treat a safe passage under the Geneva Convention.
