ARCTIC OCEAN – Scientists and engineers remove an ice tethered profiler from its crate Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018, about 715 miles north of Barrow, Alaska. An ice tethered profiler moves along a cable underneath the Arctic ice and takes scientific measurements, including temperature, depth, current and salinity, and transmits that data using satellites to scientists in the United States for analysis. The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) is underway in the Arctic with about 100 crew members and 30 scientists to deploy sensors and autonomous submarines to study stratified ocean dynamics and how environmental factors affect the water below the ice surface for the Office of Naval Research.
