Operations Manager Jim Sandberg (left) shakes the hand of Lonnie Murrell, of Warsaw, Mo., while presenting an ‘Act of Heroism” award to him. Mr. Murrell’s vigilance and quick action, led to him picking up two men who had been stranded in the water after a boating accident for more than 45 minutes.
“Mr. Murrell’s actions are in keeping with the spirit of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers safety first and caring for the recreation public,” reads the citation signed by Col. Doug Guttormsen, commander, Kansas City District.
Mr. Murrell’s wife, Sonnie, 3rd from left, then their son, Tim Murrell, a Missouri State Highway Patrol – Water Patrol officer, and Don Eckers (right), owner of Long Shoal Marina, Warsaw, Mo., were present for the award ceremony.
