An F/A-18F Super Hornet F414 jet engine is throttled to afterburner while being tested on the fantail aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), July 1. Jet engines are tested by Stennis' aircraft intermediate maintenance department's jet engine repair shop to ensure they are in perfect working order before being reinstalled into aircraft. Stennis, as part of the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group, is on a regularly scheduled deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and maritime operations. Maritime operations help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations.
