Police block traffic on the southbound Glenn Highway north of Anchorage, Alaska, in response to severe highway damage caused near Mirror Lake by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake at 8:29 a.m. Nov. 30, 2018. The quake caused massive structural damage in Anchorage and neighboring communities, but early reporting showed no loss of life or serious injury. Nearby military families at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson were shaken by the quake and numerous aftershocks, but no major damage was reported in initial inspections. Alaska Gov. Bill Walker has declared a state of emergency and the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management incident command center was established at JBER to closely monitor reports of aftershocks and assess damage to roads, bridges and buildings.
