Connor Tourek, 18, and Sam Mahoney, 18, are awarded with certificates of recognition from the Veterans of Foreign Wars during their Eagle Scout Ceremony, Dec. 20, at Mokapu Elementary School. Like the military, the scouts must not only earn badges and awards, but also plan, develop and provide leadership to other scouts during community projects. These accomplishments are mandatory before rising to the next rank. Tourek and Mahoney earned 21 merit badges, and completed all the steps required before becoming an Eagle Scout, the last rank in the Boy Scouts of America. “It’s a big relief because I put a lot of time in,” said Tourek after his ceremony. “There were a lot of steps to complete before getting here, and I’m glad everyone came out to support Sam and me. It feels great that I’m finally becoming an Eagle Scout, and it took a lot of hard work.”
