A view of the installation of the pressure vessel at the deactivated former SM-1 nuclear power plant at Fort Belvoir. The facility provided power to Fort Belvoir and served as a training facility before being deactivated in 1973. Partial decommissioning was completed in 1974 and consisted of the removal of the nuclear fuel, minor decontamination, shipment of necessary radioactive waste, sealing of the pressure vessel, and installing appropriate warning signs and monitoring devices.
