Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit's Maritime Raid Force hold security during a fast-roping exercise as part of Visit, Board, Search and Seizure training at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, Jan. 9, 2019. The purpose of this exercise is to refine the fast-roping capabilities of the MRF Marines in order to more swiftly and efficiently insert via air. The objective of VBSS training is to refine the capabilities of Marines of the MEU's MRF for searches and counter-piracy operations onboard ships under way. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
