Cpl. Eric J. Hansen, right, receives flowers from a family member, left, of the woman who’s life he saved in Mihama at a restaurant outside of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma’s gate Jan. 4. Hansen, a Marine with Marine Air Support Squadron 2, noticed a group of people panicking while eating at a local restaurant with friends Kathy Linker, Lisa A. Verville and Maelo Cains. Once he realized what was going on, Hansen saved the woman’s life by performing the Heimlich maneuver to remove the food she had been choking on. “Everyone around was in shock and at a loss of actions. I started the Heimlich,” said Hansen. “I knelt down behind her and performed the Heimlich until small pieces of rice and meat shards came out.” MASS-2 is part of Marine Air Control Group 18, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
