190420-N-GC639-1255 INDIAN OCEAN (April 20, 2019) – A U.S. Navy P8 Poseidon performs a low altitude fly by above, left to right; the Sri Lanka navy warship SLNS Samudura (P 621), the Sri Lanka navy warship SLNS Sayurala (P 623), the expeditionary fast transport ship USNS Millinocket (T-EPF 3), and the guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance (DDG 111) as they transit the Indian Ocean in formation for a photo exercise during the sea phase of the U.S. Navy’s 25th annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise series with the Sri Lanka navy, April 20, 2019. CARAT 2019 is the 25th anniversary of the CARAT series beginning in the southern region of the island nation of Sri Lanka, where U. S. Sailors and Marines join the Sri Lankan Armed Forces to conduct partnered training that focuses on building interoperability during both the sea and shore phases of the exercise. During the exercise Sailors and Marines will conduct a broad range of naval competencies ranging from explosive ordnance disposal, underwater diving sessions and civil engineering to search and rescue and humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
