The memorial plaque for Capt. Arthur Bonifas and 1st Lt. Mark Barrett stands idle as a reminder of the Axe Murder Incident on Aug. 18, 1976. Bonifas and Barrett were slain by soldiers of the Korean People's Army while supervising an attempt to cut down a 100-foot poplar tree. The tree was directly in the line of sight between South Korean checkpoint No. 3 and a North Korean observation post, and caused difficulties for each side to keep tabs on one another.
