U.S. Rep. Paul Mitchell, Master Sgt. Billy Scalf, Cherie Scalf, Rebecca Scalf and Brig. Gen. John D. Slocum visit at the University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor, April 23, 2019. Billy Scalf is undergoing treatment after suffering two strokes while serving with the Michigan Air National Guard in Afghanistan in January. Cherie and Rebecca are his wife and oldest daughter. Mitchell called the White House after Scalf’s stroke to expedite Cherie getting a passport issued on a Sunday so she could meet her husband at hospital in Germany, after he was airlifted out of Afghanistan. Slocum is the 127th Wing commander at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, where Scalf has served as an aircraft crew chief for most of the past three decades. (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Tech.
