U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Johnny Payanomendez, an aviation boatswain’s mate (handling) with the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group, looks on as Maritime Raid Force Marines with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit conduct fast-rope training on the flight deck of the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3). The MRF Marines took part in the training to maintain combat readiness and efficiency. Marines and Sailors with the 22nd MEU and Kearsarge ARG are deployed to the 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
