If a meteorologist predicts a sunny day but you find yourself at a picnic in the rain, it’s easy to get upset. What if the weather prediction was the difference between a multi-million dollar un-manned aircraft returning to base safely or crashing? To keep sensitive aircraft flying, weather technicians monitor and provide weather forecast updates by the minute. Staff Sgt. Calvin Szewczyk is a Weather Technician and has been assigned at the 171st Air Refueling Wing for six years. He graduated high school from Deer Lakes and shortly thereafter joined the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. Calvin wanted to set his future up for success without building debt from college tuition. He utilized his education benefits and earned a free bachelors degree in secondary education with a concentration in social studies. During his tenure at California University of Pennsylvania, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. Even though he earned an education degree, Calvin continues to show plenty of enthusiasm towards his military career field. Calvin relished like a child at a playground while explaining how he was able to provide assistance in landing an unmanned aircraft through two-way communication directly with the pilot. He gave directional assistance to the pilot preventing the aircraft from flying through immediate severe weather that would have abruptly ended the mission. Calvin hopes to finish his military career by serving his twenty years as a Guardsman for Pennsylvania. (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Bryan Hoover)
