U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Derek Pollock, the non-commissioned officer in charge for combat arms training and maintenance, instructs Airmen of the 224th Joint Communications Support Squadron at the 165th Airlift Wing firing range Aug. 10, 2019. Thirty-seven Airmen of the 224th JCSS, based in Brunswick, GA, satisfied CATM currency requirements in preparation for an upcoming six-month deployment to an undisclosed location. Teams will be tasked to provide communications and help desk support to customers throughout their area of operations, manage the Joint Network Operations Center and work as part of quick reactionary teams. Mission demands of the unit precipitate 18-month deployment cycles, placing emphasis on maintaining mission readiness and resiliency. U.S. Air Force Maj. Thomas Naldrett, 224th JCSS Operations Officer, a 10-year veteran of the unit who has nearly a dozen deployments under his belt, emphasizes the importance of readiness and resiliency for troops. "We partner those who may be departing on their first deployment with those who’ve deployed several times," he said. "We’re a communications unit so we ensure every member has access to some form of communications to talk to friends and family back home and we encourage them to do so." The 224th JCSS offers careers in communications, personnel, knowledge operations, and logistics, among other job specialties. For those looking for an opportunity to earn advanced training, gain credentials that transfer to the civilian sector and serve abroad, Naldrett maintains they are always looking for the best and the brightest. "To join this squadron you have to be a cut above," he said. "We look for individuals that are highly intelligent, highly motivated and highly dedicated to the service. If you’re willing to put in the effort we’re willing to get you trained." He adds, "Those who join the unit either onboard full-time or go back to school full-time with the benefits that they’re earned from deploying
