“I was stationed at Ramstein in Germany, where I had my now three-year-old. After I had her, I was really struggling with depression. I was in a bad space. I spoke with mental health, and they were like, ‘You need to find something for you.’ A couple days later, I was on Facebook, and I saw an event that was trying to find new skaters for a local national and military roller derby team called the Roller Girls of the Apocalypse. They were out there in the nearby city. I went to the first meeting, and that was enough. I was sold. I bought skates right away. I just dove in really deep. I got on the public relations board, I really started working hard with the sport, and I have not left since.

I left Ramstein a little bit over a year ago, and I’m now part of a league called Arch Rival Roller Derby, which houses the #5 ranked team in the world. My local team is the Stunt Devils. These human beings are superheroes! We have doctors, nurses, teachers, librarians, a silversmith, active duty members, horticulturalists, people from all different backgrounds coming together to play a strong and beautiful sport. I think a pivotal point of why we all play is the impact the derby community has on our lives. I’ve gotten a billion roller derby sisters, brothers, and cousins who have taught me so much, not only on the track but also about life and finding balance. They’ve done everything from pick me up when my car is broken down to hold me when I’m crying. In St. Louis, I’m still fairly new, but they’ve done nothing but accept me and love me and wrap their arms around me. And I won’t stop playing until I can’t.”
