Second Lieutenant Ivan Zelenin, a student at the Basic Officer Course, carries a simulated artillery round to a M777 howitzer during an MOS Specific Physical Standards (MSPS) evaluation, Oct. 3, 2019. The MSPS is an additional physical fitness assessment which occurs once a year for those in the combat arms communities and consists of a battery of tasks that must be completed in a prescribed amount of time. The Basic Officer Course is six months long and is designed to train and educate newly commissioned or appointed officers in the high standards of professional knowledge, esprit-de-corps, and leadership to prepare them for duty as company grade officers in the Marine Corps, with particular emphasis on the duties, responsibilities, and warfighting skills required of a rifle platoon commander.
